Australia's polymer banknote program, developed jointly by the Reserve Bank and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, saw this denomination enter circulation in 1994 as part of the full rollover from paper. The switch wasn't cosmetic — polymer notes last significantly longer in circulation and are considerably harder to counterfeit, a practical response to a surge in high-quality counterfeiting of the paper series in the late 1980s.
Garry Emery's design work on this series earned international attention, and the format was subsequently licensed to numerous other central banks. The Evans/Macfarlane signature combination reflects the governorship transition to Ian Macfarlane in September 1996, though notes bearing that pairing didn't enter circulation until 1997.
