Tennis returned to the Olympic programme at Seoul 1988 after a 64-year absence — dropped after Paris 1924 amid disputes between the International Lawn Tennis Federation and the IOC over amateur eligibility rules. This Andorran issue was struck in anticipation of that reinstatement, part of a broader series marking sports returning to or newly entering the Games. Joan Martí i Alanis, the issuing authority named on the coin, served as Bishop of Urgell and therefore co-prince of Andorra — the Bishopric's role in the principality's dual-monarchy structure making him a formal head of state.
