Additional information

Andorra issued no domestic coinage of its own until 1982, relying entirely on French francs and Spanish pesetas in daily circulation for centuries. The 1993 diners series was part of a sustained push by the General Council to establish numismatic identity ahead of Andorra's 1993 Customs Union agreement with the European Community — the same year the country finally adopted its first written constitution.

Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell from 1971 to 2003, and in that role acted as one of Andorra's two co-princes. The gold inlay technique used on this issue was a deliberate prestige choice, not a minting tradition.
