Opmerkingen

Bethel, the diaconal community near Bielefeld founded in 1867, operated its own internal currency well into the twentieth century — a practice rooted in the institution's founding philosophy of creating a self-sufficient settlement for people with epilepsy and other disabilities. The scrip circulated exclusively within the Bethel community and its affiliated houses Sarepta and Nazareth, functioning as a control mechanism that kept wages and purchases inside the settlement's economy rather than leaking into surrounding commercial life.

Giesecke & Devrient's involvement is the telling detail here. Commissioning a security printer of that calibre for what was essentially institutional voucher currency reflects how seriously Bethel treated the integrity of its internal system, even in 1973.
