Swaziland achieved independence from Britain on September 6, 1968, making this among the first coins struck for the new kingdom. The .800 silver composition mirrors the Rand-aligned coinage conventions Swaziland inherited from its pre-independence monetary relationship with South Africa, before the country joined the Common Monetary Area and eventually introduced the lilangeni in 1974.
