Issued as part of the Royal Australian Mint's "Masterpieces in Silver" subscription sets, which ran through the 1990s and into the early 2000s and were aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. These sets repackaged existing denominations in proof-quality silver as a revenue stream — the face value was nominal; the real transaction was the premium over spot. The 4th portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley and adopted by Australian coinage in 1999, had barely entered production before appearing here.
