Reverse description Left-facing crowned bust of King George V, depicted in military uniform with fur-trimmed collar, wearing an imperial state crown with cross pattée at summit and arched bands richly detailed in relief. The portrait is bold and high-relief, adapted from the effigy used on early twentieth-century Australian coinage. A beaded inner border frames the design, and the circumferential Latin legend reads GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT: OMN: REX F.D. IND: IMP:, running from the lower left around the top and continuing to the lower right, with stop punctuation between abbreviated titles. The deeply mirrored proof fields enhance the frosted sculptural quality of the royal effigy.

Additional information

Issued as part of the Royal Australian Mint's "Masterpieces in Silver" subscription sets, which ran through the 1990s and into the early 2000s and were aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. These sets repackaged existing denominations in proof-quality silver as a revenue stream — the face value was nominal; the real transaction was the premium over spot. The 4th portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley and adopted by Australian coinage in 1999, had barely entered production before appearing here.
