| Obverse description | Central device features the radiant Sun of May, depicted as a human face surrounded by alternating straight and wavy rays emanating boldly across the field. The sun motif, a national symbol of Uruguay, occupies the majority of the coin's face and is executed in high relief. A toothed border frames the design. The circular legend reads REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY arcing from lower left to upper right, with the date 1857 positioned in the lower exergue flanked by small decorative flourishes. |
