The Xianfeng-era large cash issues were an emergency fiscal measure born directly from the catastrophic strain of the Taiping Rebellion, which by 1853 had captured Nanjing and severed major revenue streams to Beijing. The Board of Revenue authorized denominations far exceeding the standard one-cash piece — 10, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 cash among them — as a crude inflationary stopgap. The 20-cash sits in the middle of this chaotic hierarchy.
The Fuzhou Board of Revenue mint, known by its Manchu mint mark Boo-fu, struck these in brass rather than the traditional bronze alloy, a material substitution that itself reflects the period's resource pressures. Contemporary circulation was troubled — public resistance to the overvalued denominations was widespread, and many issues were hoarded, melted, or simply refused in trade.
