20 Bolivianos

Bolivia's 1986 redenomination replaced the peso boliviano at a rate of one million to one — a direct consequence of hyperinflation that had peaked at over 20,000% annually in 1985, one of the most severe episodes recorded in the twentieth century. The boliviano was reintroduced specifically to restore transactional credibility, and this note belongs to the first series issued under the new monetary unit.

The Canadian Bank Note Company produced the series, its Ottawa plant a longtime supplier to Latin American central banks navigating currency reform under IMF pressure in the mid-1980s.
