Brazil's gold coinage of this period was produced under chronic pressure from London banking houses, which effectively controlled imperial credit and demanded hard-currency settlement for trade deficits. The 20,000 réis denomination was the highest-value circulating gold coin of the empire and saw most of its use in wholesale commercial transactions rather than retail exchange — few ordinary Brazilians would have handled one.
The 1851–1852 issue at Rio de Janeiro came during a period of relative monetary stability under Finance Minister Rodrigues Torres, shortly before the Sousa Franco reforms destabilized Brazilian credit markets later in the decade.
