By 1946, Greece had endured Axis occupation, hyperinflation so severe that a 1944 redenomination lopped eleven zeros off the currency, and then immediate civil war. This 20,000 Drachmai note entered circulation into an economy still rebuilding after one of the worst currency collapses in European history — the 1944 inflation had briefly pushed daily prices into the billions. Bradbury Wilkinson's production in New Malden brought a degree of technical credibility the Greek state could no longer supply domestically.
The eight-palmette ornamental row at the bottom is the distinguishing feature separating this variety from related issues in the series — a small but cataloguers' reliable differentiator across otherwise similar printings.
