Landkreis Neuss was one of hundreds of German rural districts forced into emergency currency production during the hyperinflation peak of 1923, when the Reichsmark collapsed so rapidly that local authorities, businesses, and municipalities had no choice but to print their own Notgeld to meet payroll and daily transactions. By the time denominations reached the millions, the printing schedules at regional presses like B. Kühlen in Mönchengladbach were essentially continuous — notes often lost practical purchasing power within days of issue.
The Rhineland's occupation by French and Belgian forces following the Ruhr crisis complicated local monetary circulation further, as Reich currency transfers were disrupted and district-level Notgeld filled the gap.
