The German hyperinflation of 1923 pushed issuing authority far beyond the Reichsbank itself. Regional railway directorates — the Reichsbahndirektionen — were authorized to issue emergency currency (Notgeld) to meet their own payroll obligations when central bank notes were unavailable in sufficient quantities to keep rail operations staffed. Frankfurt's directorate was among the most prolific of these issuers.
Twenty billion marks. By autumn 1923, that sum would not cover a tram fare for long.
