Aversbeschreibung Multi-line Arabic calligraphic legend in the tughra-inspired Ottoman script fills the central field, enclosed within a raised beaded oval border. The inscription names Sultan Selim, son of Mustafa Khan, accompanied by the pious acclamation 'May his possession last!' Below the main legend, the mint name Islambol (Istanbul) is inscribed, with the AH date 1203 appearing at the base of the oval. The entire design is framed by a continuous outer border of large raised beads running along the coin's periphery.

Reversbeschreibung Bold multi-line Arabic calligraphic legend occupies the entire central field, enclosed within a raised beaded oval border. The inscription bears the imperial titulature proclaiming the sultan 'Sultan of the two lands and emperor of the two seas,' followed by the dynastic formula 'Sultan, son of the Sultan,' with the regnal year numeral appearing within the text. The composition is rendered in a confident, deeply struck Ottoman calligraphic style, and the field is surrounded by the same continuous raised bead border as the obverse.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Selim III came to power in 1789 with an immediate agenda of military and fiscal modernization — the same reforms that would eventually cost him his throne. The 2 Zolota was part of a debased coinage inherited from his predecessors, the billon composition reflecting decades of silver debasement driven by chronic Ottoman budget deficits and costly wars with Russia and Austria that were still ongoing at the time of his accession.

The Islambol mint spelling — distinct from the later standardized "Istanbul" — appears consistently on issues of this reign.
