The Amber Road series, launched by the National Bank of Poland in 2001, commemorates the ancient trade network running from the Baltic coast south through Roman territories — a route that made Polish-region amber one of the most valuable commodities in the ancient Mediterranean world. These Nordic gold bimetallic issues were part of a broader commemorative program Poland accelerated in the years surrounding its NATO accession and EU candidacy negotiations.
Nordic gold, the aluminum-bronze alloy developed by the Swedish firm Outokumpu in the 1990s, was adopted by numerous European mints for its resistance to counterfeiting and tarnish.
