2 Zlotys Chełm

Part of Poland's long-running Nordic gold 2-złote GN series, this coin commemorates Chełm, a city in eastern Poland whose recorded history stretches back to the early Piast dynasty. The city changed hands repeatedly across the twentieth century — Russian Imperial territory, briefly an independent Ukrainian claim under the 1918 Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, then interwar Poland, then Soviet occupation, then German occupation within the General Government.

The GN series was launched in 1994 and eventually ran to well over 100 distinct regional and thematic issues, with mintages typically around 900,000 pieces.
