| Obverse description | The crowned Polish White Eagle, the national emblem, is depicted in high relief at the centre of the field, its wings spread and talons extended. Occupying the lower portion of the design is a stylised representation of a medieval city gate with an arched passageway rendered in ashlar masonry, referencing the historic fortifications of Polish towns. The circular legend 'RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA' arcs along the upper rim, while the date '2006' appears to the right and the denomination '2 ZŁ' is inscribed at the lower right. The mint mark 'MW' of the Mint of Poland is placed near the eagle. |

Part of Poland's long-running Nordic gold 2-złote GN series, this coin commemorates Chełm, a city in eastern Poland whose recorded history stretches back to the early Piast dynasty. The city changed hands repeatedly across the twentieth century — Russian Imperial territory, briefly an independent Ukrainian claim under the 1918 Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, then interwar Poland, then Soviet occupation, then German occupation within the General Government.
The GN series was launched in 1994 and eventually ran to well over 100 distinct regional and thematic issues, with mintages typically around 900,000 pieces.
