Eberhard Louis was just ten years old in 1697, ruling under a regency following his father's death. The duchy's administration, eager to project continuity and legitimacy, authorized substantial silver coinage during this guardianship period — a political gesture as much as a monetary one. The double thaler format, expensive to produce and rarely circulated, was aimed squarely at diplomatic gift-giving and court display.
