| Obverse description | Armored bust of Duke Eberhard Ludwig facing right, wearing elaborately etched cuirass with decorative pauldrons and a finely rendered lace cravat. The duke's flowing allonge wig falls in heavy curls over his shoulders, rendered with exceptional baroque detail. The legend encircles the effigy along the outer border, separated from the milled rim. The portrait is executed in high relief in the grand baroque court style characteristic of late 17th-century German coinage. |

Eberhard Louis was just ten years old in 1697, ruling under a regency following his father's death. The duchy's administration, eager to project continuity and legitimacy, authorized substantial silver coinage during this guardianship period — a political gesture as much as a monetary one. The double thaler format, expensive to produce and rarely circulated, was aimed squarely at diplomatic gift-giving and court display.
Davenport's ST#7883 designation places this among the Saxon-circle multiple thalers documented in his specialized supplement, a reference that separates the serious collector from the casual one.
