This mule pairs the obverse of the Leopold I memorial issue with a reverse die not originally intended for it — an error of intent rather than accident, almost certainly produced for collector sale rather than circulation. Baden's mint at Karlsruhe was already well practiced in striking presentation pieces and cabinet specimens by the 1840s, and mules of this type were sometimes sanctioned quietly to satisfy demand from the growing German numismatic market without official acknowledgment.
