Obverse description Bare-headed right-facing bust of Duke Alexander Carl of Anhalt-Bernburg occupying the central field, rendered with fine detail including sideburns and a short beard. The portrait is executed in high relief in a neoclassical style. The circumferential legend reads ALEX. CARL HERZOG ZU ANHALT, separated from the border by a continuous beaded inner ring. The mint mark A appears below the bust truncation at the bottom of the field.

Reverse description The elaborately detailed quartered arms of Anhalt-Bernburg displayed on a large heraldic shield, draped with ermine-lined mantling tied with ribbons on either side and surmounted by a ducal crown. A collar of medallions encircles the shield as an order chain. The circumferential legend reads 2 THALER VII EINE F. MARK 3½ GULDEN flanked by six-pointed ornamental stars, with VEREINS 1840 MÜNZE across the lower arc, the date split around the base of the shield. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.
