The Saint George and the Dragon composition used here follows the long-running series initiated by the Royal Mint on the British sovereign, where Benedetto Pistrucci's design has appeared virtually uninterrupted since 1817. Samoa's adoption of the motif places it in a crowded field of bullion-adjacent issues from Pacific Island nations — Fiji, Niue, and Tuvalu have all licensed similar imagery — a practice driven by the numismatic licensing revenue these sovereignties collect rather than any domestic monetary need. The 2 Tala denomination has no meaningful circulation role.
