Ecuador's sucre coinage of the early 1970s was minted against a backdrop of significant fiscal pressure — the country had only just begun exporting petroleum in 1972, and the windfall revenues had yet to stabilize an economy long dependent on banana and cacao exports. The 2 sucres denomination saw relatively heavy circulation through this transitional period, which makes problem-free survivors more elusive than mintage figures alone would suggest.
