2 Stuivers `Double Wapenstuiver` Overstrike on Zutphen Rijderschelling

By 1701, the Dutch Republic was awash in underweight and foreign silver coinage circulating well below its nominal value. The States of Holland's solution — restamping existing provincial pieces rather than melting and recoining — was cheaper and faster, though it created a hybrid object that satisfied no one completely. Zutphen Rijderschellingen were among the types pulled from circulation for this treatment, their original authority effectively cancelled by Holland's dies.

The underlying host coin is usually still partially legible through the overstrike, which is what makes these pieces genuinely interesting to attribute.
