Philip the Handsome's claim over Guelders was never straightforward. The duchy spent much of the 1490s as a contested prize between Habsburg ambitions and the stubborn independence of Karel van Egmond, who would eventually reclaim it in 1492 and spend the next four decades defying the Habsburgs at every turn. Coinage struck in Philip's name during this window reflects a moment of Habsburg administrative reach that proved, in the end, temporary.
The double vuurijzer denomination — named for the fire-striker motif — is specific to the Low Countries regional coinage tradition of this period. GH#97-4 is among the scarcer Philip attributions for Guelders, with the brief issuing window of 1492–1494 keeping production volumes low.
