La Rioja operated as a semi-autonomous minting authority during the fractious early years of Argentine independence, when Buenos Aires had lost effective control over the interior provinces. The coins struck there between 1824 and 1826 were produced under conditions that were, by any measure, improvised — local silver supply was inconsistent, and the assayers changed frequently enough that die quality varied sharply across the run. CJ catalogues this type across five subvarieties (CJ#41–45), distinctions driven largely by assayer initial combinations and subtle die differences rather than deliberate design changes.
Provincial issues from La Rioja are routinely found with irregular planchets and uneven strikes, a product of the mint's limited infrastructure rather than post-strike wear.
