Christian IV's fiscal pressures during the opening years of the Thirty Years' War forced a sustained debasement of Danish small coinage. The skilling denominations issued between 1624 and 1629 reflect a mint policy calibrated to fund military ambitions on a budget — Denmark's intervention beginning in 1625 ended in the humiliating Peace of Lübeck four years later, a defeat that permanently curtailed Danish influence in northern Germany.
Billon at this fineness circulated hard and wore fast, which accounts for the rarity of sharply detailed survivors.
