Nigeria's pre-independence coinage was struck before the country formally left British oversight in October 1960, issued under the authority of the West African Currency Board rather than any Nigerian institution. The 1959 series — including this florin-equivalent — was essentially a transitional issue, giving the incoming republic a functioning coinage ready for day one of sovereignty without the disruption of a currency gap.
The Royal Mint, London handled production.
