The New Zealand Commercial Exchange Company Limited was a short-lived Wellington finance house, and this 2s6d scrip-style note sits at an unusual intersection of private credit and colonial commercial practice. By the late 1890s, the Banking Act had long since closed New Zealand to new private banks of issue, so the Commercial Exchange operated in a legal grey zone — issuing instruments that functioned like banknotes without technically being ones.
W.H. Cook was a Wellington jobbing printer, not a security press. That matters: these notes lack the intaglio depth or anti-forgery precision of contemporary bank paper. The dual signatures of Douglas and Sherriff Bain suggest a partnership or board-authorization model rather than a formal cashier-and-manager structure.
The company does not appear to have survived past 1901.
