Scarborough Castle held out under Sir Hugh Cholmley for an extraordinary five months against Parliamentary siege, finally surrendering in July 1645. With no mint and no supply lines, the garrison resorted to cutting plate silver — domestic items, candlesticks, whatever could be found — into weighed pieces and stamping them as emergency currency to pay troops. The denominations are erratic precisely because the pieces were cut to weight rather than struck to a die.
No two Scarborough siege pieces are truly alike in shape. The 2s 7d denomination is among the more irregular, reflecting just how improvised the entire operation was.
