The sertum denomination was created specifically for Bhutan's collector coinage program in the 1970s, with no intention of circulation. This platinum variant of the 1979 issue was struck in extremely limited numbers alongside gold equivalents, targeting the international bullion and numismatic markets that Bhutan's government was actively courting for foreign currency revenue during that decade.
KM#52a is among the scarcer platinum issues from this program. The .950 fineness is slightly below the .9995 standard common to modern platinum bullion, placing this firmly in the proof collector category rather than any bullion specification.
