Obverse description Equestrian portrait of Emperor Maximilian I in full plate armour, mounted on a richly caparisoned and prancing horse facing right, the emperor holding an imperial orb in his left hand and a sceptre in his right, wearing an imperial crown; the Habsburg double-headed eagle displayed on a shield appears in the upper left field, with the mint name HALLOMAS partially visible on the horse's trapper. The date 1509 appears in the lower field beneath the horse. A continuous Latin legend in Gothic lettering runs around the entire periphery within a beaded border, reading: MAXIMILIANVS DEI GRA ROM IMP SEMP AVG ARCHIDVX AVSTRIE.

Reverse description Central achievement of arms consisting of a large crowned composite shield bearing the imperial double-headed eagle, quartered with the arms of the Habsburg hereditary lands, surrounded by a radiating arrangement of sixteen smaller escutcheons representing the principal territories and provinces of the empire, each rendered in fine heraldic detail. The entire composition is contained within an inner beaded border, with a continuous Latin legend encircling the periphery proclaiming Maximilian as king and most powerful prince of the many provinces of Europe.
