Ras al-Khaimah was the last of the Trucial States to join the United Arab Emirates in 1972, and its brief pre-federation period produced a flurry of coinage clearly aimed at international collectors rather than local commerce. This 1969 issue appeared under Saqr bin Mohammad al-Qasimi, who had ruled since 1948 and would remain emir until his death in 2010 — one of the longest-reigning Gulf rulers of the modern era. The coins circulated little, if at all.
Franklin Mint handled production for several of these Trucial State issues, supplying a ready pipeline for the collector market that rendered most pieces essentially non-circulating from the outset.
