Costa Rica's counterstamp program was born of necessity: the young republic lacked both the equipment and the trained personnel to strike its own coinage in meaningful quantities during the 1840s. Rather than import foreign coin outright, authorities applied official punches to Spanish colonial and South American host coins already circulating, legitimizing them as domestic currency. The Type III counterstamp — a distinct punch from the earlier types — is thought to reflect administrative efforts to re-validate previously stamped pieces or authenticate a new authorization cycle, though the documentary record on the precise sequence remains incomplete.
Host coin identity matters considerably here. Pieces struck on Lima or Potosí hosts carry different collector premiums depending on legibility of the underlying mint mark.
