Obverse description The obverse bears the Costa Rican counterstamp applied over the host coin's obverse, depicting a draped female bust in left profile, her hair arranged in an upswept coiffure. The counterstamp cartouche carries the legend COSTA RICA arched above the effigy and the denomination 2R below the truncation. The underlying host coin shows the bust of Joseph Napoleon, King of Spain, with the surrounding legend JOSEPH NAP. DEI GRATIA and the date 1811 at the base of the field.

Reverse description The reverse displays the Costa Rican counterstamp of a stylized oak tree surmounted by a crown, enclosed within a beaded oval cartouche, with the legend HABILITADA POR EL GOB. distributed around the tree. The host coin's reverse is visible beneath the counterstamp and features the crowned royal arms of Castile and León with the denomination 4 and mint mark flanking the shield, surrounded by the legend HISPANARUM ET IND. REX and the mintmark MA.
