El Salvador declared independence from the Federal Republic of Central America in 1838, but this coin predates even that — issued when the region was still nominally united under the Central American Federation yet functionally ungovernable. The 1828 provisional issues were authorized locally because the federation's central minting apparatus had already collapsed in practice, leaving individual states to fend for themselves.
KM#4 is among the scarcest of the early Salvadoran provisionals.
