Zacatecas began striking coins in 1810 under royalist authority specifically because the insurgency had severed supply lines from Mexico City, leaving the northern silver-mining provinces without adequate circulating coinage. The mint operated under emergency conditions, and the early issues from 1811 are notably crude — not from carelessness, but because the facility was improvised under military pressure, using whatever equipment could be assembled locally.
The royalist provisional issues from Zacatecas are distinct from later, more regular production. Dies were cut by hand under constrained circumstances, and no two coins from this period strike identically.
