Felipe V abdicated in January 1724 in favor of his son Luis I, then reclaimed the throne just seven months later when Luis died of smallpox. The coins struck in his second reign required an updated assayer system at the Mexico City mint, and the 1729–1733 issues reflect a transitional period in that bureaucratic reorganization. Assayer marks during these years can be inconsistent, and attribution of individual pieces sometimes requires cross-referencing with contemporary mint records rather than relying on the mark alone.
