Ecuador's first independent coinage was not struck fresh — it was recycled. Facing an immediate shortage of circulating coin after separating from Gran Colombia in 1830, the new government authorized the countermarking of existing Spanish colonial 2 reales pieces already in circulation. The "ECUADOR / 1831" stamp effectively nationalized foreign silver without the expense or infrastructure of a functioning mint.
Ecuador would not open its own mint until Quito began operations in 1833.
