Carlos III's 1786 Ordinance of Intendants reorganized New Spain's administrative structure, and the mint at Mexico City operated under renewed fiscal scrutiny throughout this period. The years 1785–1786 were particularly brutal in central Mexico — the "Year of Hunger" following catastrophic crop failures killed an estimated 300,000 people, and the colonial treasury was under pressure to maintain silver shipments to Madrid regardless.
KM#88.2a is distinguished from the earlier 88.2 by assayer initial combinations specific to this window of production. The FM and FF assayer pairings define the subtype.
