Carlos II, the last Habsburg king of Spain, ruled under regency until 1675 and spent much of his reign incapacitated by what contemporaries described as chronic illness and what historians have variously attributed to inbreeding, poison, or both. The Lima mint operated under considerable administrative strain during this period, with viceregal oversight frequently disrupted by contraband silver networks that siphoned raw material away from official coinage channels.
