Guatemala's 2 Reales coinage of this period occupied an awkward monetary moment — the country was in the process of transitioning away from the colonial real system toward a decimal currency, which arrived definitively with the peso reforms of the 1880s. Issues from 1881 were struck in the final years before that system was abandoned entirely, making them transitional survivors of a dying denomination rather than coins of any settled monetary order.
