Obverse description Central device consists of a quetzal bird perched atop an open scroll or tablet inscribed with the independence date legend, flanked by two crossed rifles with bayonets and two crossed swords in saltire below, all within a wreath of laurel and oak branches tied at the base. The fineness mark '.835', mint initial 'E', and date '1881' appear in the exergue along the lower field. The toothed border runs continuously around the coin's rim.
