Honduras declared independence from the Mexican Empire of Agustín de Iturbide in July 1823, and this coin belongs to the immediate aftermath of that break — struck as the newly formed Central American Federation was still assembling its institutions. The Tegucigalpa mint, operating with limited technical resources, produced coinage of notably inconsistent quality during this transitional period.
KM#12 is among the earliest issues attributable specifically to Honduran authority rather than colonial or Mexican imperial administration.
