| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms — the quinas shield quartered with castles — set within a plain inner border. The legend ANTONIVS I D G R P ET A (Antonius I Dei Gratia Rex Portugalliae Et Algarbii) encircles the design, referencing António I's claim to the Portuguese throne. The die work is characteristic of the irregular hammered coinage produced at the Angra mint in the Azores during the brief reign of Prior of Crato. The beaded outer border is partially visible due to the irregular flan. |

The devotional legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (In This Sign You Shall Conquer) encircles the cross, reading around the full circumference of the coin. The inscription reflects the religious and political messaging associated with António I's contested reign. The strike is typical of hammered Azorean emergency coinage, with an uneven flan and variable depth of impression. A small cross pattée appears as a stop within the legend. |
