The Union Buildings in Pretoria, designed by Herbert Baker and completed in 1913, served as the administrative seat of the Union of South Africa from its opening — a government formed just three years after the bitter conclusion of the Anglo-Boer War. Baker's commission was itself a deliberate act of political architecture, intended to reconcile Boer and Briton through symmetrical twin wings joined by a curved colonnade. The centenary issue marks that 1913 opening rather than the 1910 political union itself.
