The Mahdist State's coinage was produced at the Omdurman mint under conditions of chronic material shortage, which accounts for the debased billon alloy found across most issues of the period. By 1894, the state was entering its terminal decade — Anglo-Egyptian reconquest forces under Kitchener would destroy Omdurman four years later at the Battle of Karari. The KM#9.2 variety is distinguished from KM#9.1 by the presence of stars in the field, a detail that reflects local die-cutting practice rather than any centralized design directive.
