Obverse description Central field dominated by a large tughra (calligraphic imperial monogram) of Caliph Abdullah ibn Muhammad, rendered in elaborate Arabic script. Two six-pointed stars flank the tughra, one to the upper left and one to the lower right of the design. The entire motif is enclosed within a toothed or beaded border running along the coin's circumference. The field surrounding the tughra is plain, lending emphasis to the central calligraphic device. The overall style reflects the Mahdist tradition of adapting Ottoman numismatic conventions to their own coinage.
