Mindon Min established the Royal Burmese Mint at Mandalay in 1865, the first indigenous mint to operate in Burma in centuries, specifically to reduce dependence on foreign coinage circulating in the kingdom. The 1870 copper issues came during mounting British pressure on the Konbaung dynasty — within five years of this coin's striking, the second Anglo-Burmese War's territorial losses would further shrink the sovereign minting authority to which this piece belongs.
